The Locomotive Bed
The locomotive bed is the most complex of the beds, including various storage features: drawers on one side, cupboards on the other, a bogie toy box that can be pulled out, more storage space in the fire pit, and hanging rails in the cab. The smoke stack is merely a waste-paper basket covered with foam rubber and cloth. The locomotive includes a headlight that turns on.The seats in the cab and the moving handles try to evoke the feel of a cab in a real steam-locomotive, enabling play.
This bed displays the design features common to all the beds. It's made of pine, which is finished clear, with padauk highlights (oiled), and plywood, which is painted in primary colours and then polyurethaned. The metal work is lacquered brass.
The drawings below don't completely agree with the constructed bed. For example, the two forward-facing windows in the built-bed are square, those in the plans round. Similarly the step to climb up the bed are on the front of the engine rather than the side.Their main value is to give a sense of the construction and the dimensions.
Parents concerned about the safety of a sleeping child might want to extend the rails that run beside the mattress at the cab end. Indeed I would encourage anyone building one of these designs to feel free to adapt.
